A fully automated system allows you to create a character profile, manage your skills and inventory, and join or create a ship to transverse the stars in. If you are the owner of the ship, you can manage its inventory and handle its weekly profits. In addition, you can select your character and, possibly, your ship crew's profession.

The setting touches on races, cultures, entertainment, history, technology, organizations, sports, skills, and professions.

Roleplaying is handled on an extensive forum with over 50 worlds to explore.

This past month has been spent developing the Desert Realm Fantasy Setting and Message Board. There are now 44 different Sci-Fi and Fantasy forums and sub-forums ranging from Art to Roleplaying to Website Promotion. With 96 members and over 3,300 posts, there is plenty to do here.

One of the first things that new webpage designers do is find one of the many graphics websites out there and download their favorite dozen background patterns. At this point, they probably haven't figured out how to make a table or other more advanced HTML concepts, so they make the entire page use these backgrounds. Of course, they want to use all of the different ones so each page has a different pattern.

This makes it hard to read, especially if the text colors are close to the same color as the pattern. Since each page has a different pattern, not only does the user have to download each background, but there is no unity between pages and the visitor may become confused.

Patterns are an excellent way to spice up a page, but they should be used where there isn't any text or the text is bold enough to be clearly read.

The majority of your text should be placed on solid colors, and the font color and background color should have high contrast to make it easier for somebody to read it. You can accomplish this by setting a table's background color.

An example of this concept is on the current website. The words "Desert Realm" are sitting on top of a castle, but since the words are large with high contrast, it can still be read easily. The rest of the text has been placed on top of solid colors.

The Desert Realm Newsletter is a monthly publication that profiles at least one science fiction and/or fantasy website, provides information about new changes and features to the Desert Realm website, and offers tips regarding good web design and search engine placement.

To have your website profiled in the next newsletter, you first need to apply to become a featured link. Only sites that are ranked Dragon or Sage will be profiled in a newsletter. You are welcome to ask me to profile your website; however, I ultimately choose which website will make the news.
