Game Servers
If you're looking to host an online game, you'll need to host it on a game server, which is really just a computer that dedicated to hosting your game. There are many different options available depending on how much you are willing to spend. You can host your game server from your house if you have a good internet upload speed. If you do this, you'll need a dedicated IP address unless you use a Dynamic DNS service. Other options are to use a colocation data center, which will usually rent a space in their server room that may be for a single spot or an entire rack. With this option, you buy the computer and just pay for space and bandwidth. A cheap option is to share a server though you may run into performance and security problems. Many shared servers will only let you use a small percentage of their processor or will block access if your game takes too many resources. You may be able to find a data center that offers game server rentals. This may be a good option if you only plan on running a game for limited amounts of time. Game servers can run anything from a MUD to Counter Strike or Unreal Tournament and everything in between.
